G.G.C.  vs  South West Secretaries at Churston G.C. on Tuesday 7th September 2021

Match Result – Win 4 to 2

Twelve of our number eventually met up at a very busy Churston Golf Club on a glorious morning, following a long and fraught journey south due to various traffic hold ups and a contraflow system on the Newton Abbott by-pass with no obvious reason for the diversion! (This paled into oblivion compared to the ridiculous and poorly signed complete closure of this main road in the evening with little or no clear diversion signs! Leading to a considerable delay for most of us in returning home).

The venue was new to the majority of GGC and its quirky design along with slow but true greens made for some challenging competition.  Despite the glorious sunshine and forecasted temperature a stiffish breeze off the sea kept us comfortable but added to the challenges of clubbing the course.

There were some very creditable performances on this difficult layout which enabled us to record our third win in a row as we look to be turning our season around.

I played with Clive Fluck, my chauffeur, against Malcolm Wilkinson, the stand-in Captain for the day and Alan Creber from Launceston playing off 5. Needless to say he was giving us quite a few shots but not as many as the 21 his partner received! We got off to a rather slow start losing the first to a nett par 3 and luckily scraped a half on the next. However, although it took some time to master the pace of the greens and undulations of the fairways, we came good in the end helped by a birdie and par nett birdie burst from Clive on the back 9 which saw us close out our match 3 and 1, having been all square at the turn.

President Ian Smith & John Morris playing against a pair including John Mills from Lydney went down by 2 holes in a close contest. Trevor Stewart and Theo White also lost 3&2.

Ian Hughes allegedly carried Ross Antonczyk with a bad back to a 2&1 victory.

Match Manager John Cumming & Ed Kitchen won 3&1. Secretary Jim Ford & Eric Millard, bringing up the rear, won 1 up.

We were well looked after by all the young female catering & bar staff with good service and nice food. The chef’s speciality being “loads of chips”!

A good day was had by all. Shame about the journey home……
