G.G.C. v South Wales Coast Match at Royal Porthcawl GC on Tuesday 7th June 2022.
The intrepid Gloucestershire Gladiators ventured across the border to Wales, Royal Porthcawl was our destination. Hoping to extend the winning start to the season.
We were greeted by Club Captain Nick Jones who gave us an insight to the club and its history.
After the light lunch we gathered at the 1st tee to be greeted by the magnificent vista. My partner Andrew Glen, the present Captain of Lilley Brook GC, and I looked forward to the battle, we had a good game with to-ing and fro-ing, unfortunately more to-ing resulting in a 3&2 loss for us.
Game 2 VC Geoff and Chris had more success winning 3&2, the highlight being a duff drive on the par 3 14 a sculled second shot across the green only to sink a 50-foot putt to half the hole.
Game 3 Jim & Ian could not hold the Welsh pairing losing out by 4&3 but enjoyed the battle.
Game 4 consisting of match manager John with partner Shaun restored the equilibrium coming out victors 2&1.
Game 5 Brickhampton pair of Neil & Andy succumbed to a 4&3 loss.
Game 6 the Minchinhampton pairing of Dave and Alastair squared the match by winning 2&1.
Game 7 Alan and Neil from Lansdown unfortunately followed the pattern of losing the odd games 1-3-5-7 3&2.
We all waited with bated breath for the last but not least game 8 with Lydney pairing of Joe and Mark to see if we could get the draw, but it wasn’t to be as they went down 4&3.
This gave the final match total of a 5-3 loss.
After a shower and change, the drinks and the superb dinner of Lamb Shank followed by Sticky Toffee pudding made the loss a little more acceptable. Both SWCCS Captain Dillwyn and myself praised the condition of the course, the catering and the friendly rivalry and asked Captain Nick to pass on our thanks to the course manager, also to the clubhouse staff for keeping us fed and watered.
After a very enjoyable day we then all made our way back over the water licking our wounds.
