Gloucestershire Golf Captains

The Gloucestershire Golf Captains met up at Cotswold Edge GC and looked forward to a good match against Somerset Golf Captains. The weather was warm and breezy with the course presented in very good condition and our thanks go to the green staff.

The match secretaries read out the pairings during a light lunch. Two of our players were unable to attend so John Cumming was frantically phoning around for replacements and he succeeded.

​

Cotswold Edge Captain Alan (Twister) Taylor and I were paired with Somerset Captain Dave and his playing partner Adrian. We had a close first 9 holes, but Dave and Adrian showed their class on the back 9 beating us 5-3.

​

Vice-Captain Eric Millard and Nick Broady had a good game but unfortunately were beaten 2-1.

​

President Mike Slatter and Alan Vietch lost 3-1, so things were not looking good.

​

John Cumming and partner Theo Wite had a good result winning 1 up.

​

Then our 1st replacement Bill Hill partnered Paul Mason and they won convincingly 6-5.

​

Our 2nd replacement Terry Griffin and partner Alan Taylor managed a half and were followed by Neil Casling and Phil Porter winning 3-2.

​

Everything hinged on the last pairing of Kevin Minnear and John Barrett and they successfully won 6-4.

​

We then sat down to a very enjoyable meal of Steak & Mushroom Pie, Peas and Chips followed by Cheesecake pudding. I passed on our thanks to the members and management of Cotswold Edge GC for facilitating our event.

​

Both Captains did the formal speeches and the match result announced.

 

Overall result - Match Won 4½ - 3½. The trophy was presented to me by Somerset Captain Dave.
