G.G.C. v Gwent Match at Tredegar Park GC on Thursday 16th June 2022.
The Gloucestershire Gladiators crossed the border to do battle with the Celts of Gwent at Tredegar Park GC.
A fine sunny day greeted us. After a light lunch and the pairing being introduced we assembled at the 1st tee; Adrian Stalley, my partner for the day, versus Gwent Captain Ken and Club Captain Huw.
We sorted handicaps and soon learned that, as Sam said last year, WHS stands for Welsh Handicap System as we gave 7 and 18 shots to our opponents. We had a good battle but unfortunately after having to give a shot on a 91-yard par three with Ken putting his tee shot to 4 feet, went down 2&1.
The handicaps took toll in the 2nd game where VC Geoff and partner Ian gave 16 and 15 shots, scored 14 pars and two birdies but still succumbed to a 3&1 loss.
The trend continued in game 3 with Ross and Bill playing Tredegar pairing of Andrew and Dillwyn and losing 2&1.
Finally, in game 4 there was some good news with match manager John and Alastair only having to give 6 shots and won 3 & 2.
Game 5 saw equilibrium being restored with Brian & Richard giving shots and losing 4 & 3.
The scores now were 4-1 to Gwent the bad news must have filtered down to the team in spite of giving 10 and 7 shots Graham and Secretary Jim triumphed 5 & 3 followed by Patrick and John giving 13 and 14 shot winning 5 & 4.
Everything hinged on the last game a win would give us a draw; we all waited with baited breath only to be deflated when David and Phil declared the news - they lost 5 & 3.
The match result was a 5 – 3 win for Gwent.
On the journey down I was telling Richard and Ian to look out for Dillwyn who always wears very loud coloured suits, but was let down when he turned out in a bland Gwent blazer and grey trousers in comparison.
Anyway, after a very pleasant meal and passing on our thanks to the Greenstaff & Catering staff, I had the unenviable task of presenting the trophy to Ken the Gwent Captain for the first time in a number of years.
