G.G.C. v Gwent Match at Green Meadow GC on Wednesday 14th June 2023

The Gloucestershire Golf Captains crossed the Welsh border and met up at Green Meadow GC in Gwent. The weather was hot and sunny so shorts were the order of the day. The course was presented in excellent condition and our thanks go to the green staff.

After a light lunch and the pairing being introduced by Gwent Honorary Secretary Mike Hanner and our match secretary John Cumming, we proceeded to the 1st tee.

Phil Payne and I were paired with Gwent Captain Dillwyn and playing partner Scott Tovey the President of GreenMeadow GC. Our match was close for a while with some very good golf being played by both teams. Phil and I kept up the pressure on our opponents and secured a 4&3 victory.

VC Eric Millard and Bill Hole were under the cosh from the start of their match. Bill having to give 16 and 11 shots to the opposition, and sadly they succumbed to a 2&1 loss.

President Mike Slatter and Peter House, again giving 19 shots to one of the Gwent pairings, lost 4&3, then John Cumming and partner Brian Trendell lost 2&1.

Jim Ford and partner Mike Pigott had a tough match losing 6&5.

Things were looking decidedly dodgy for GGC at this stage as we were 4-1 down and then the Cavalry started to come in to save the day.

Chris Dooley and Joe Betty came in winners with a 3&2 victory followed by John Morrison and Geoff Anderson winning 2up.

It all hinged on our last pairing of Ian Smith and Neil Pirie who basically demolished the opposition, winning 7&6.

Happy days.

Overall result - Match Halved 4 - 4.    Trophy Retained by Gwent.

We then sat down to a very enjoyable Sunday Roast meal followed by Gateau with Ice Cream.

Both Captains did the formal speeches and as we halved the match, the trophy was retained by Gwent which I presented to Gwent Captain Dillwyn.

Many thanks to match secretary John Cumming and to everyone involved.
