G.G.C. v Devon Match at Dartmouth G & CC on Thursday 18th August 2022.
16 intrepid Gloucestershire Gladiators travelled to South Devon and Dartmouth Golf & Country Club.
We were greeted by Paul Brown the Dartmouth Club Captain on a bright and sunny morning and the team pairings were announced as we sat down to a light lunch.
In game 1 Ian Watkins and myself were paired with Devon Captain Graham Heaman and Club Captain Paul. Having never playing Dartmouth before we were greeted by very rugged undulating terrain, thankfully we had a buggy as the distances between green and the next tee were in some cases huge.
The first couple of holes were halved and then we made mistakes which gave our opponents three easy holes. By the time we reached the eighth hole the rain started with very fine drizzle. By the thirteenth we were pretty wet but we had squared the match and at this point we offered our opponents a half which they gladly took. We then made our way quickly to the shelter of the clubhouse.
Game two saw President Rex and past President Ian take on Devon President Lew and partner Malcolm unlike the wimps in the first match they played all 18 but fell short losing 2 down.
Game 3 Mike and Eric played very well to bring a halved match.
Game 4 Match Manager John and Sodbury partner Trevor brought in another half despite having to give 15 and 19 shots, well done guys.
Game 5 Gloucester pairing of Past Captain Paul and partner Don succumbed to giving loads of shots and fell to a 4-6 loss.
Game 6 Immediate Past Captain Sam and Secretary Jim brought in a fine 3-1 victory against the strong Devon pairing of Hamish and Rick.
Game 7 We were waiting for this match to see if we could get a half match but although Minchinhampton pair of Ian and Paul fought hard they unfortunately fell short losing 2-1 to Mike and Keith from Devon.
Game 8 Bill and John, Shirehampton and Henbury respectively, did succumb to the weather but not before they had secured a fine 3-2 victory against Devon Vice-Captain Phil and partner Clive.
After the match we sat down to a fine three course meal and both Graham and I thanked Dartmouth Golf Club for allowing us the use of their course. Thanks must go to the match managers for their organizing.
Thankfully there isn’t a trophy for this encounter as the match was lost 4½ - 3½.
We then started the long drive home in not very nice weather.
