G.G.C. v Cornwall Match at Lansdown GC on Friday 27th May 2022.

Result – Match Won  5 ½ to 2 ½.

Friday May 27th we gathered together at Lansdown Golf Club with the sun shining and very little wind.

After a pleasant lunch of sandwiches and chips where we were greeted by the Club Captain Margaret Ruxton, the first lady Club Captain of Lansdown and also their last Ladies Section Captain.

John Cumming and Steve Davies from Cornwall introduced the teams, the first match paired myself with playing partner Ian McKay from Cotswold Edge and after the first four holes we found ourselves two down. I then finally found a golf swing and put the ball to eight feet on 5 winning the hole. After nine holes we were all square winning 10 going to 1 up only to lose 12, 13 & 14 back to 2 down. We fought back to be all square on 17 and after a very pleasant match it was agreed by all to halve the match.

2nd group out, President Rex and Partner Steve, - unfortunately their opposition did not play ball and won by 8&6. Things were put back into the black with Vice-Captain Geoff and Eric Millard winning 2&1.

The trend continued with the pairings of John Cumming & Ian Smith winning 3&2. Holiday Chalice champion Tony Davis partnering John Phillip were quite unfriendly taking the opposition out 6&4 with Ed Kitchen & Colin Stokes being almost as bad winning 4&3.

Mike & Phil were too friendly and gave their opposition hope by losing 5&3, the match win was finally secured by Clive Reynolds and home stalwart Tony Gough winning 6&5.

After a couple of drinks, we were treated to a lovely meal where we invited Club Captain Margaret to join us. The greatest pleasure was having Cornish Captain Steve present me with the Trevor Hole Bristol Blue glass trophy, the first of many I hope.

Our thanks must go to everyone at Lansdown Golf Club especially Paul Garland and his team for preparing a fair but challenging course, the caterers for feeding us and the bar staff for keeping us watered.

A big thanks to John Cumming for organising the day and to the team for their performance.

Dereck Buttler.
