G.G.C. v Gwent at Cotswold Edge G.C. on Thursday 8th July 2021

Result – Won  4½ - 3½

Sixteen of our number met up at Cotswold Edge Golf Club on a muggy, but sunny day. The objective being to record our first win of the season and win back The Severn Cup, inaugurated at Green Meadow G.C. in 2012, which we lost resoundingly at Lydney in 2019. (Last year’s match being cancelled through Covid)

Happy to say that the objective was achieved!

The course was in great condition having recently hosted their Pro-Am. The pin positions deep into the greens, typically tricky and very fast.

Only two matches went to the 18th green. A very creditable performance as some of our number had to give numerous shots to the opposition. Jim Ford (a late replacement for our injured President) and John Phillip losing 2 down and Clive Collier and Eric Millard battling to a Half.

I was very lucky to play with Colin Stokes, the current Captain of Cotswold Edge, against Tony Tubb, the Gwent Captain, and Mike Hanner, the Gwent Secretary. They both struggled to get their games firing and we were soon in control of the match which we won 5&3. I should say Colin won 5&3 as he played extremely well recording a nett 67! I realised WHS now stood for Wotton Handicap System.

Dereck Buttler & John Barrett won 3&2, Alan Taylor & Phil Porter won 3&1 and Bill Hole & Clive Whitson won 4&3. Unfortunately Brendan Nunan (a very late replacement for John Cumming)  and Theo White lost 3&2. Keith Hanson & Graham Richings lost heavily in the last match.

My thanks go to Jim and Brendan for stepping in so late to ensure we had a full team.

We were well looked after by the catering & bar staff with good service and excellent food. I asked Colin to pass on our thanks to the members and management for facilitating our event.

Now I just need to get the trophy, a pretty rose glass vase on a wooden plinth, engraved and find a suitable position to put it on display.
