G.G.C. v Berkshire Match at Lansdown GC on Wednesday 2nd June 2021.

Result – Match Lost  3 to 5

Sixteen of our number met up at Lansdown on a warm but cloudy morning for our second inter county match this season. After a snack lunch in strict arrangements at tables of four we teed off under threatening skies. It wasn’t long before some rain set in. Fortunately it didn’t last for more than an hour.

I had the good fortune to be partnered with Rod Thomas, this year’s Captain of Lansdown, who played very well in his first outing for our association. Despite his solid play we went down 3 & 1 to a very good pair. Roger Beavis, the Berkshire Captain, and his partner Paul Wyatt, giving shots, played some exceptionally good golf. Their better ball being 5 over par gross after 18 holes!

We recorded three very good wins with President Ian Smith & Paddy Crowley and Tony Davis with Tony Gough both winning 4&3 and Jim Ford and Eric Millard winning 3&1. Sadly Dereck Buttler & Richard Salter lost 1 down on the last green having battled well for 17 holes having to give one opponent 13 shots!

The plan to back load our team did not bear fruit as our last three pairs all lost quite heavily. Clive Fluck & Brendan Nunan 4&2, Keith Hanson & Mel Missen 2 down and Pat White & Rob Payne 4&3.

We were exceedingly well looked after by the bar and catering staff at Lansdown. Each fourball dining on separate tables with table service only. The course was, as expected after a long lay-off, in very good condition. Rod was asked to pass on our thanks to the members and management for facilitating our event.
