GGCs v Bedfordshire Captains  -  Thursday 15 June 2017  -  Dunstable Downs Golf Club
Result

Again due to a clash of dates with the South West Golf Week, the usual pair in charge for the Gloucester Golf Captains matches, Tony and Ian, were engaged in other duties at Weston Super Mare Golf Club, I was asked to stand in for Ian and announce the team and order of play.

The Gloucestershire team mostly arrived in good time. A warm and friendly welcome greeted us from the Bedfordshire Golf Captains and one or two combatants from last year's matches relived a few reminiscences.  The match secretary introduced himself and the order of play etc. was sorted, so all was set for the day, quite a relief after  my last experience at Ross-on-Wye!

After a light lunch the pairings were announced and with a two tee start the matches got underway quickly, with a couple of exceptions most games were reasonably closely fought affairs. The James Braid course was in excellent condition and offered a tough but fair challenge and with good weather and good company our Captain, Slatts, along with Derek, managed a good win to set it up for the rest to follow.

The dinner was excellent (just edging out 'I thought !' the fish & chips at Ross), the service was friendly, and  punctuated only by the emergency landing of a hang glider on the course, went smoothly, but rumor has it that the club secretary was 1st on the scene to check that a green fee had been paid.

The speech by our Capt. Slatts was typically enjoyable, announcing a 7-1 victory and generously handing over some Gloucestershire golf  balls to their playing partners and the DDGC Capt. who received them gracefully if a little surprised.

The day was rounded off for those of us who returned home via the M4 with the closure of the motorway around Swindon adding a frustrating 1/2 hour to the journey.
