SW Secretaries vs GGCs Match Report

Thursday the 28th of May saw the start of our Association's Match Fixtures for the 2019 season.

We received a warm reception by our hosts The South West Secretaries at Enmore Park in Somerset.

The Course was in excellent condition and along with the glorious weather presented a true challenge on the golfing front. A big thanks to Enmore Park and Indeed Captain Ian of the SW Secs for making the day memorable.

This match was the first opportunity to assess the new Match Manager role which has been created to share the workload of our Match Secretary Ian Cornwell.

Jim Ford organised the team for this one very successfully and has set the benchmark for others to follow. Many thanks Jim the effort was much appreciated. You may all be aware that Clive Fluck and Keith Hanson will also assist as Match Managers.

In terms of the match, there is a brief game by game synopsis below, it was great to commence the season with a 4-3 victory. Thank you Glos Captains for making it a winning start and fingers crossed for more of the same at Stinchcombe Hill on the 3rd of June.

Best Regards

Paul Drinkwater.

Match1

Our match was played in the best spirit of the game but unfortunately, after going 3 down fairly early on the back 9, we failed to win the 18th which would have given us a half. We lost 2 down in the end but had an enjoyable game with Capt Ian and Mike and on a course that was very well presented for the day.

Match2

Proper up & down battle with the game nip and tuck all the way. Turning point was the 16th where SW Secretaries made an awesome birdie which helped close out a win for the home side

Match3

Another game played nip and tuck all the way with GGCs keeping in front at the turn 2up. SW Secretaries came back strongly and we found ourselves going 1 down after 15. Alarm bells were ringing which spurred the GGCs on and they got their act together to eventually finish the match 1 up.

Match4

Enjoyable game, played in good spirit and with great company. GGCs went 3 up at the turn and maintained the pressure with an eagle on the dog-leg 14th to help secure a win for the visitors

Match5

Great game on a lovely course and in very good conditions. SW Secretaries drafted in a local reserve at short notice, a young golfer playing off +3 and the current course record holder at Enmore Park! GGCs were 7 down at the turn but managed to stay in touch, until the game was closed out on the 16th for a win to the Secretaries (The +3 golfer managed no less than 7 birdies and 1 eagle during this game!)

Match6

Good match, good company with GGCs 4 up at the halfway point thanks to a better ball score of 1 over! The SW Secs clawed back to 1 down and were starting to show some form until their player decided to hit his approach shot to the 2nd green when playing the 17th!  The match finished with GGCs taking the spoils 2 & 1.

Match7

Great game played on a lovely course with GGCs 4 up at the turn. SW Secretaries made a charge and came back to within 1 but GGCs tightened the screw and notched up a win by the 17th. Lovely course, great company - that's what it's all about!
