G.G.C. v Warwickshire Match at Forest Hills GC on Thursday 30th June 2022.
It was a bright day as we arrived and assembled for this match. The pairings were announced by match manager Clive and his opposite number Tony following a light lunch of soup & sandwiches and a greeting from Forest Hills Club Captain Terry Davies along with a challenge of nearest the pin in two on the 18th hole.
I was paired with Terry versus Warwickshire Captain Mike Edwards and match manager Tony. Mike and I have had many tussles before as his club Hansworth and mine Broadway both belong to the 1895 Centenary Club and play each other annually.
Terry was the lowest handicapper in our group, therefore giving the shots, holes were exchanged throughout the front 9 only to be all square. Then the weather deteriorated with initially hail turning to rain which remained pretty steady for the rest of the game. Again holes were shared until the 18th Tee where a half was agreed by both pairs.
President Rex and partner Paddy after a titanic battle were defeated by Williams pairing of Jaz and Rod 3-2.
Vice-Captain Geoff and Lilley Brook Captain Andrew restored the equilibrium bring in the same winning score of 3-2.
Hon Sec Jim and Lydney veteran Joe had a terrific match against JJ Pritchard and partner Barry. JJ was found guilty of killing worms as he seemed to skull the ball on a number of occasions holing one shot. However, Jim and Joe prevailed winning 1 up.
Match manager Clive and partner John suffered and the hands of (WHS) Warwickshire Handicapping System losing 4-3 to Alan & Mike.
Cotswold Edge and Ross on Wye pairing Ian and Phil triumphed in game 6 winning 3-2.
Match 7, Former Forest Hills Captain and now St Mellons (Wales) member, Brian and Vice President Mike who was like a drowned rat because he forgot both an umbrella and waterproofs but despite this they brought in a 1 up win.
Last but not least home player Barry and Rodway Hill stalwart Dave finished the job bringing home a 3-2 win.
Although no trophy was exchanged Gloucestershire Gladiators triumphed 5½-2½.
Our thanks must go to the management and members of Forest Hills, Paul the course manager who presented the course in terrific condition and Jean Hosford and her staff for supplied us with a super meal.
