Cornwall v G.G.C. Match at St. Austell GC on Friday 9th October 2020.

Result – Match Lost 4 & 2.

On a typically blustery, and at times very wet, autumn day our 2020 season concluded at St. Austell Golf Club where 12 of our members experienced this “interesting” and rather “quirky” course in opposing 12 representatives of The Cornish Golf Captains.

The match was played in good spirit throughout with lots of banter in the clubhouse over lunch. Despite some fine performances from our pairings the opposition’s experience of this course, allegedly known locally as “St. Awful Golf Club”, proved to be the deciding factor in most matches.

An excellent performance by John Phillip & Trevor Hole saw these Welsh Wizards conjuring up a win 3&2. Phil Payne & Eric Millard scraped a creditable half. So too did Mike Slatter & Stephen Price, despite being dormy 4 up! Joe Betty and Peter French had a close game eventually losing 2 down.

I was again partnered with our President Ian Smith who continued his good recent form but, without much help from me, we succumbed to lose 1 down.

The main action was in match two with Dereck Buttler & Ian Watkins taking on Glyn Rowett, a past Captain and current President of the host club, playing off 8 and Mike Rees playing off 10. Glyn decided the match should be played off the White tees as the Yellow tees were too far forward! After 7 holes our boys were 6 down but battled back to only lose 2&1. A valiant performance against the odds.

We dined on a fine selection of sandwiches and chips in our separate four balls as each match concluded. There followed two short speeches in which I asked Glyn to pass on our thanks to the membership and management for facilitating the fixture.

The trophy was then presented back to John Stanforth the Cornish Captain. Trevor Hole was present and had originally put up this Bristol Blue Glass vase as a perpetual trophy in 2009 therefore  I asked him to do the honours.

Sam Collins.
