Ladies Weekend - Carlyon Bay 2021

The weekend started on various days with tourists arriving from Wednesday until Saturday. The weather was superb throughout with light winds and sunshine.

The Carlyon Bay Hotel was in excellent condition and the staff was friendly, helpful and professional as always. Needless to say that we were well looked after for our entire stay.

Thursday was for casual golf except for the continuing annual Carlyon challenge which has been ongoing for many years. The closely fought battle between Vicky Watkins/Dereck Buttler & Ian Watkins/Paul Drinkwater was eventually won by Vicky & Dereck who romped home 2-1!

Friday saw the start of the competitions proper with 12 intrepid warriors doing battle with the Pirates from Cornwall (Cornish Captains) at The Point GC, Polzeath. Result – match halved. (See Match Report).

Some of the other golfers took part in the Friday Greensomes which is a Pairs competition.

The winners with 37 points were Lois Price and her new golfing partner John Barrett, 2nd were Sue Trewin & Mike Pigott with 33pts and 3rd Heather Reed & Vicky Watkins with 32pts.

Saturday covered the competitions for the Men’s Presidents Shield (Hidden partners) and the Ladies Margaret Roberts (individual) trophies. These are run in conjunction with the Carlyon Cup (for overall best individual).

The Carlyon Cup was a closely fought affair with two players tying on 39 pts. Newbie Barry Preece took the honours on countback from Eric Millard.

The Presidents Shield was won by Eric Millard & Mike Pigott with 73pts, 2nd Eddie Robinson & John Cumming with 70pts on countback from Stephen Gallagher & Trevor Stewart.

The Margaret Roberts Trophy was won by Tess Dick with 31pts, 2nd with 30pts was Glo Slatter beating Vicky Watkins on countback.

Whilst the golfers strutted their stuff on the golf course, the non-golfing ladies did their own thing on Saturday with either a shopping/sight-seeing trip to Truro or a discounted Spa treatment.

Saturday evening saw the annual black tie drinks reception hosted by President Ian with his lady Diana and Captain Sam with his lady Pam followed by a superb dinner.

The Carlyon Cup was presented to Barry Preece by General Manager Ali. (Unfortunately, Barry could not stay for the prize giving on Sunday evening due to work commitments).

On Sunday morning we were greeted with bright sunshine for the start of the Mixed Foursomes (drawn for) partner’s contest.

This was a closely fought contest with 3 pairs all tying on 35pts. Ian Watkins & Heather Reed were on 31pts after 17 holes but only managed 1pt on the last hole. Mike Slatter put his partner Pat Righton in the trees on the left of the green only for Pat to chip in for 4pts giving them 35pts and 2nd place on count back but the eventual winners were Barry Preece & Vicky Watkins with 24pts on the back 9 and taking the trophy.

The rest of the players did battle for the Secretaries Goblet (Individual) and the Secretaries Claret Jug (Hidden Pairs).

The eventual winners were in the goblet Ian Smith 41pts, 2nd Chris Wagstaff 39pts and 3rd Tony Davis 37pts.

The Claret Jug was won by Chris Wagstaff & John Christie 75pts, 2nd Geoff Lowe & Stephen Gallagher 70pts on countback from Jim Ford & Clive Fluck.

On Sunday morning, Sue Parry and Maggie Drinkwater looked after the Non-golfing Partners putting contest. The winner was Mllie Broady with 36 putts and in 2nd place Diana Smith.

The afternoon saw them enjoy a complimentary 3½ hours of cheese and wine tasting; not so much cheese but plenty of wine!

In the evening we sat down to our last dinner of the trip followed by the all-important prize giving and the countless stories of what might have been if only a drive hadn’t reached the rough or a miss hit putt had dropped.

We also took the opportunity to present Tony Davis with a special award in recognition of his 15 years as the GGC Honorary Secretary. His wife Ruby received a well-deserved bouquet of flowers!

Everyone commented on what a great time they had had.

We departed after breakfast on the Monday morning - all looking forward to more of the same in 2022.

Thanks to Dereck Buttler & Jim Ford for the organisation of the weekend and to Eric Millard for standing in as our official photographer.
