Ladies Weekend - Carlyon Bay 2020

It was slightly strange this year at Carlyon due to the Covid 19 restrictions that were in place.

A total of 34 intrepid travellers made the journey and judging by the feedback all agreed that it was a wonderful weekend. Unfortunately we were not allowed to hold the traditional Saturday evening where everyone would have been presented to the President and Captain and their ladies. The prize presentation had to be held outdoors on the patio at 5:00PM on Sunday. Thankfully we had good weather all weekend!

The weekend began on Thursday with the Carlyon challenge, normally a game between Gerry Osbourne/Vicky Watkins and Paul Drinkwater/Ian Watkins. Unfortunately neither Paul or Gerry could attend this year therefore the mantel fell on Pat Righton and Dereck Buttler to take their places. The teams were Ian and Dereck versus the ladies and with the difference in standard scratch it meant that Pat & Vicky had 4 extra shots. The outcome was a win by 2 & 1 for the gentlemen but we did not gloat!

Friday

We played the match against Cornwall Captains at St Austell GC unfortunately GGC came second with the local team winning 4-2.

The golfers not involved in the match played for the Friday Greensomes. A hotly disputed tournament entailed where Lois Price/Audrey Payne eventually picked up the laurels with Vicky Watkins/Olive French taking 2nd place.

Saturday

Competitions were held for the Margaret Roberts Trophy (Ladies), the Presidents Shield (Mens) and The Carlyon Cup (Ladies & Men).

Note: The President's Shield is normally a Men's 4BBB Stableford however, due to lack of numbers and the inclusion of the ladies, the format was revised for this year to an individual stableford with a random draw for partners.

Sunday

Battle commenced for The Secretary’s Goblet hidden pairs and the Mixed Foursomes, with the Secretary’s singles as a subsidiary prize.

Last but not least was the non-golfing ladies putting competition run exceptionally well by Mary Cole. The eventual winner was Val Betty who played for the very first time. (Look out Joe!)

Although we were down on numbers the hotel looked after us exceptionally well. All of the members who came said it was very enjoyable and look forward to coming back next year.
